Sony has improved an already fantastic pair of headphones by introducing the WH1000XM4 wireless. They are less heavy, more durable and feature an audio profile that is more balanced (though bass-heavy). They also include an app to adjust the sound. They've improved their active noise cancellation, removing the background noise and extending the battery life.

These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0, with support for SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. These headphones can transfer high-resolution audio, however, bluetooth headphone wireless you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. In addition, the WH-1000XM4s can connect to two Bluetooth devices at once and switch between them when required. This feature can be enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works very well.

A subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensibility of their touch panels. They respond faster to a tap on a panel, and this makes them easier to control during a phone call or listen to media. Sony also added a feature that makes voice sound clearer and more precise on calls which is evident and a nice feature.

The WH-1000XM4s might not be perfect, but they're among the best wireless headphones we've ever test. They're comfortable, good to the touch, and have an impressive battery that lasts for longer than 30 hours continuously. They can also be used passively using a TRS cable which is perfect for those who travel or want to save power.

The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Premium Over Ear Wireless Headphones with Built-In Mic-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfy, and their ANC can block out more background noise. They also have a companion app that lets you alter their audio performance and EQ settings are more flexible than the B&W's. The B&Ws are built better and can connect to two Bluetooth headphone wireless (www.headphonesshop.Uk) devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD and have an AI-driven engine that attempts to increase the size of compressed music to high-resolution. This is known as DSEE Extreme and it does an excellent job of improving the clarity of music, especially when listening to lossless files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 Noise-Canceling headset is the most current version of a headset that is a popular choice among commuters and passengers across the world. The new model doesn't reinvent the wheel. It is based on the same formula which has made its predecessor so successful, while adding USB-C and better noise cancellation.

Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones sport an elegant design and feel that oozes quality. The headband, constructed of plastic, has a solid feel thanks to the hinges made of steel at pivot points. It also has the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you extend or retract your ear cups. The cups are cushioned and have soft pads that fit over your ears without pressing your head. They weigh 238 grams and are fairly compact when folded. You can use them when you're wearing an overcoat or sweater since the noise cancellation function is functional even when you aren't on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the most impressive sound quality for this price range. The frequencies are dull and lack the detail that headphones with higher prices might be able to bring out. The higher registers tend to be more boosted and is suitable for most music genres but could cause problems for more delicate or intricate genres of music. The bass is decent, but lacks power.

The possibility of pauseing the playback when you remove the headset is a feature that's missing. This is a feature Bose's rivals have provided for several years. Another omission is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQs within the app but it would be nice if there was a manual control.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with multipoint support as well as more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's audio and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s have four microphones inbuilt to hear your voice when you are on the phone. The quality of calls is generally excellent, but the headsets do not have the capability to muffle your voice during playback which is a feature that other wireless headphones have. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s was released in February 2022 included manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that is known for high-performance headphones that provide long-lasting comfort and a design that makes listeners feel like they're listening to something truly special. The Bathys are their first wireless noise cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. They come with a high-performance USB DAC built in, which means you can use them both for wired and wireless listening.

The Bathys have a very good battery performance with Focal claims of 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We got more than 40 hours of playback on average from a single charge. If you do require a recharge, there's an indicator light on the right earcup that will change to red when the headphone needs to be charged.

They have a decent amount of features for headphones of this price point with support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you'll need to select the source device every time you would like to listen). The headphones have a built in microphone that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones have an easy-to navigate interface that makes it simple to control music and make calls.

For wireless headphones that are over-ear, the Bathys perform very well in our test of noise cancellation. They cut down the sound of the surrounding environment by about 9 decibels in average. They aren't as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless, but it's still very effective.

The Bathys headphones performed well in our headphone tests. Their frequency response was generally similar to the SoundGuys headphone curve with minor variations on the bass and mids. The Bathys have a booming sound profile that can make vocals, instruments and cymbals appear unreal.

They also have very good leakage resistance, meaning you can wear them out in public without worrying about people hearing your music. The microphone has a decent recording quality via Bluetooth with just a little distortion in the mid to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new update of the company's top Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not a great entry in this class. The latest model is improved over the previous model with a sleeker design, improved gesture controls, and an enormous battery life.

The improvements are subtle but add up to an over-ear pair of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with a hardshell case to protect them when on the move. The Momentum 4s are also compatible with all devices, just like other Bluetooth headphones of recent times, like those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They can be used with Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods extra features, such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The biggest change is the huge battery that can run for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation turned on. This is easily double the amount of the competitors and sufficient to go on a long-distance trip without having to search for an outlet.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 score with a focus on their audio quality and ANC as two of their strengths. The only issue he has is they lack of gravitas in the mids and treble. This makes orchestral music sounds flat instead of grand. The bass is well-rounded, but it can be overemphasised and can cause fatigue in songs with heavy bass lines, like the drums in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The Momentum 4s are not designed to cause pressure on your neck or ear. However they can be fidgety when wearing them in the house or during longer listening sessions, and can move around on your head, causing intense head movements. This can cause them to wake up unexpectedly, which can be distracting when listening to music or making calls. Fortunately they shut down after 15 minutes of slumber by default and can be switched off by pressing the power button.
