It also has recharge and resume capabilities that automatically sends the robot back to its base to charge when its battery runs low, and it can pick up where it left off, without missing a beat.

The i5+ robot is perfect for homes with many rooms. However, it's not meant for carpeted or stairways. It also has a small dustbin capacity, which means it's not able to clean your entire home if you have a large amount of trash or pets. If you're seeking a Roomba that can take on more challenging environments, consider the i7 or i9 model. These robots are more equipped to tackle stairs, and can also be used for wet mopping. The iRobot Combo i5/i5+, with its unique design and cutting-edge technology is an ideal option for homes that need both a vacuum cleaner and mop.

The most notable improvement is an integrated automatic dirt disposal system that eliminates the need to empty the dust bin after each clean. The i7+ also has permanent mapping that lets it remember the design of your home and adapt to various layouts instantly.

The Combo i7+ is easy to set up, with a straightforward app walkthrough and clear on-screen instructions that help you through the initial configuration and registration process. Once the robot is registered it will be able to mop or vacuum using the iRobot Robot Vacuums: Effortless Cleaning for Any Home HOME app, or Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands. The i7+ can be programmed easily and allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and to set virtual boundaries.

In our tests the i7+ performed very well, clambering over floor breaks and rugs with ease. It was also able to identify obstacles like furniture without difficulty, though it was unable to climb over a 2-inch marble slab which separated the kitchen and living areas. Its edge cleaning was much better than the results we saw from cheaper robot vacuums, with a firm grip on corners.

Once the i7+ reached its maximum capacity, it returns to its Clean Base and empties its contents. Then it gets ready for the next clean. You can add cleaning fluid by pressing a button on the opposite side of the robot. A small water tank/dustbin is then clipped open.

The only real downside is that the Clean Base occupies a lot of space. This makes it difficult to put the i7+ into a cupboard when it's not in use. However, this is a common issue with robots cleaning and the majority of manufacturers offer smaller charging stations that are less bulky. They also fit under cabinets, making it easier to hide the iRobot when it is not being used. iRobot has reached out to us following publication to clarify that the Combo i7+ is designed to be used only with the manufacturer-approved cleaning solution (sold separately). It should not contain water as it could cause damage to internal components and decrease performance.

iRobot Roomba Combo i9

This robot vacuums and mops simultaneously. It uses its dual stainless steel arm to pick up dirt as it moves. It also lowers its mop pad when it spots a carpet to avoid getting the rug wet which is a wonderful feature. This feature, dubbed Dry Rug Intelligence by iRobot was a great success in my tests and was a huge improvement over the earlier Roomba models that could only vacuum or mop without switching modes.

The iRobot App allows you to create cleaning routines and access the status and history. The app also houses "robot health" information, including how much longer you can expect your iRobot's lifespan before it needs new filters or a new mopping pad. The app also includes detailed instructions, troubleshooting suggestions, and advanced settings to adjust the mopping water level and the number of mopping passes per floor and much more.

The i8's latest navigation software helps you navigate your home and is able to maneuver around obstacles like power cords. The navigation system can also alter the cleaning route based on different floors. If you have a large house, the i8 may require multiple runs before it's done mapping.

This robot also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. You can control it using your voice. This is an excellent feature for busy people. This is a very useful feature for those who need to clean their homes regularly and efficiently.

In addition to being able to connect to smart home devices, the iRobot i8 can work with the iBraava Jet M6, which can be set to automatically mop after the i8 has finished vacuuming. The i8 comes with a Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal System and an additional HEPA filter.

The i9+ also does an excellent job of picking up pet messes, with the only caveat is that it may miss some when you have very deep litter boxes (we've observed this issue on other robots as well). It's effective at clearing away a wide mix of kinds of debris without leaving streaks of dust or scratching the surface, unlike some competitors (we'd recommend the eufy X10 Pro Omni for pet people).
