In our tests we discovered that the iRobot S9+ cleans thoroughly and efficiently on a range of floor surfaces, from hard to medium-pile carpets and rug. It also worked well with vinyl, and laminate flooring. It also did a nice job of navigating between furniture and objects although it did struggle with stairs, and can accidentally crash into things like bookcases.

We liked the fact that the S9 automatically returns to its base to empty its dust bin once it's full, which significantly minimizes the need to be hands-on with maintenance. The dust bag should last about 30 loads, which is about two months and you'll need to replace the filter once every so often (which is actually recommended by iRobot). We've found that the iRobot S9+ doesn't get loud during operation and is a great choice for those who live with kids or pets.

Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

Created to take one of the most difficult tasks off your shoulders, robot vacuum cleaners do all the work of keeping hardwood and carpeted floors free of everyday dust. Certain robot vacuum cleaners can be controlled by an app on your smartphone, while others have mopping technology for kitchen and bathroom flooring. They're a great choice for busy families and are becoming more affordable. However, if you want the latest features on your robotic cleaner, you'll be spending a little more.

The Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid is an all-in-one vacuum robot mop and mopping machine, making it a good choice for those who live in a house with multiple floors. The vacuum's 0.6l bin can hold a large amount of pet hair. Its dual motors offer powerful cleaning power. The dustbin can be easily removed and emptied, which is great because you'll need to do this regularly.

It's easy to set it up as well, but I do recommend fully charging the X8 Hybrid before running it for the first time. Install the Eufy Home application and follow the directions to connect it to your WiFi network. Once you've done this the app will assist you create an accurate map of your home. Rooms can be named, divide rooms into sub-rooms (good for open-plan living) and guide the X8 Hybrid to specific areas that need cleaning at a specific time. Other robots also have similar mapping and scanning functions, but Eufy's application feels more refined and intuitive than others.

A great feature on the X8 Hybrid is that you can activate the mop or vacuum with your voice, thanks to the integration with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. This is a wonderful feature that makes the robot hands-free. It worked well in our test house.

As with many robotic vacuums the X8 Hybrid has some issues with floors that are bare. It can miss pet fur and other small objects, and is known to knock things like its charger on the charging platform. It's not as quiet as other models we've tried, and the whirring sounds can be distracting.

Roborock V3S Pro

The robot doesn't have as many features as some of the more expensive models we evaluated however, it does have all the essentials. It has a huge enough dust bin to hold plenty of dirt until it's time to empty it and its vacuum and mop system is perfect for hard floors and low-pile carpets. It's also extremely quiet. We were able watch television while it was cleaning without feeling as though we were being overwhelmed by noise.

Our test participants were extremely pleased with how easy the machine was to operate and set up. They also appreciated the ability to clean all the mess from their flooring. It was successful in cleaning pet hair, messes and carpeting, but it was a bit more difficult at eliminating stubborn stains. The app was simple to use and intuitive. They were able program the vacuum to clean frequently to cut down on manual work. It doesn't feature the ability to avoid objects or map technology, which means it cannot be sent to specific rooms or follow virtual borders (though magnetic boundaries are compatible).

The V3S Pro is another model from the iRobot's budget line. It comes with some impressive features at an affordable price. It was the best robot vacuum we tested for navigating and avoiding obstacles. It's also a great budget option for those who want a more intelligent, self-emptying robot vacuum that can handle hair and pet messes on floors made of hardwood or carpets with low pile. It's also super quiet and has a large dust bin that holds lots of debris before it needs emptying and you don't have to worry about regularly emptying it.

The V3S Pro did not make it into our top choice lists from trusted sources who conduct hands-on tests, however it received high marks from Modern Castle, Smart Robot Reviews and The Ambient. They were impressed with how easy it was to install and use, however they did note that its battery life was short and it didn't manage to stay clear of some of the toughest mess we've put it through.
