The B&Ws have an EQ that is more flexible and a companion app to tweak the audio performance. The B&Ws are more robust and can connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD and feature an AI-driven engine which tries to increase the size of compressed music to high resolution. 2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 Noise-Canceling headset is the latest version of a headset which has become a popular choice for commuters and passengers all over the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel the new model follows the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, and adds USB-C, better noise cancellation and a longer battery life.

These over-ear Bose headsets come with a premium feel and appearance, similar to the QC 35 II headphones that were before them. The headband, which is made of plastic, has a firm feel thanks to the hinges made of metal at pivot points. It also features the familiar ratcheting mechanism when you retract or extend your ear cups. The cups are soft, cushioned pads that fit comfortably over the ears and do not apply pressure to your head. When folded, they weigh 238 grams. They can be paired with a sweater or coat because they function even when they are not on the head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones, the QC45s do not provide the best sound quality at this price point. The frequencies are comparatively flat and lack details that headphones with higher prices might be able to bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is fine for most music genres but could be a problem for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is great, but lacks the punch.

The ability to pause playback after removing the headset is a feature that is not available. This is a feature Bose's rivals have offered for years. Another oversight is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQ settings in the app however it would be nice to have a manual control.

They come with a top-quality USB DAC built in, making them suitable both for wired and wireless listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for up to 30 hours. We had more than 40 hours of playback time on average from just one charge. If you do require a recharge, there's a light on the right ear cup that will turn red when the headphone needs to be charged.

For headphones for this price, they offer lots of features. They support multiple devices at once and feature automatic pairing. (You have to select your source device manually every time you listen.) The headphones come with built-in microphones that can be used with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones feature an easy to navigate interface that makes it simple to control music and make calls.

They cut down the ambient sound by about 9 decibels in average. This isn't as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, but it's still fairly effective.

In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones, the Bathys were a good overall performer with an overall frequency response that matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with just minor differences in the mids and bass. They have a deep, bass-filled sound profile which adds plenty of boom to mixes, however, they can make instruments and vocals like cymbals sound dull.

You can wear them wherever and not worry about whether others hear your music. Their mic has passable quality of recording via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new update to the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The last pair, the Momentum 3, was a solid but unspectacular entry into the category. The latest pair improves on the previous model with a sleeker design, improved gesture controls, and a huge battery life.

The improvements here are subtle but they make a pair of over-ears that seem like a step up from the previous model. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with a hardshell case to protect them when moving. The Momentum 4s are also device-agnostic, like many other Bluetooth headphones of recent years, such as the ones from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They can be used with Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods additional features such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious difference here is the massive battery, which claims up to 60 hours of playback when noise cancellation activated. This is more than what the majority of the competition can offer and is enough for a multi-day trip without worrying about finding a power outlet to charge it.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget, gave the headphones an 82 percent score. He cited their audio quality and ANC features as the top strengths. The only thing he dislikes is that they lack a sense of gravitas in the mids as well as treble, meaning that orchestral tracks tend to sound flat instead of grand. This can cause them to wake up at random, which can be distracting during calls or music. Fortunately, they shut down after 15 minutes of rest by default, and can be manually switched off by pressing the power button.
