Loose Screws

First, take off the caps made of plastic that cover the screws at the top and bottom of your handle. They can be removed using either a fingernail, or a flathead screwdriver. Once the caps are removed, start with the screw on the top and tighten it until it's secure. You don't want to over tighten the screw as it could cause damage to the head. Then you can move to the screw on the bottom and tighten it in the same way. After both screws are tightened, the handle should feel more solid and should open more easily.

If your window handle is extremely loose or the lock paddle is not able to be inserted then it's likely time to replace it with an upgrade to the crank mechanism. Mail order can be purchased from a variety of hardware replacement specialists. It will be cheaper than replacing the entire handle. You can also tighten the crank by opening the window and adjusting the crank arm until it is aligned with the notch on the track. After firmly pushing in the handle, take off any trim mounting screws and lift the casement from the window jamb. (Photo 1) You will need to replace any bent or rusted trim screws. Compare the new operator with the old to make sure they match and then install it in the manner shown in Photo 5.

It may be necessary to fill the screw holes with auto body filler prior to tightening them again. Filler should be slightly larger than the screwhole to ensure that it will bite into wood surrounding it when it is turned in the position.

Broken Spindle

The spindle of your window handle could become worn after a period of time. This can cause the handle to fail or not function properly. Fortunately replacing the spindle is an easy and simple fix that can be accomplished by anyone who has basic tools. It is essential to check the alignment of handle to make sure that it is secure in the correct position.

Broken Base

Close the window, then move the handle to the right position.

Sometimes, the handle can completely be separated from the base. This happens with tilt-and-turn as well as traditional handles. It is extremely rare and typically only occurs in high use areas. Fortunately, it is an easy fix that can be fixed with a replacement.

The handle teeth can also be stripped. This is usually the case of older windows with the crank handle. The teeth, which are typically made of cast iron, can be stripped away due to excessive use or age. It is a simple repair to double glazed windows and can be done by using a small vise grip or a pair pliers.

If your handle splits away from the base, you will need to remove the crank mechanism to get access and replace the handle. This can be challenging for an amateur DIYer to complete however, it is doable.

First take off the screw that attaches the crank operator to the window frame. Open the window so that the guide bushing of the crank arm aligns with the notch on the track. Then, using a pair of pliers, push the window and remove the guide bushing from the crank arm.

Once the old handle is removed, look at the crank stud for worn teeth and then the handle for indications of wear and tear. If the splines are worn, you should continue to replace the window crank handle or look into replacing the entire handle, advises Family Handyman.

Attach the trim cover and any screws that are rusted to the frame before installing the new window crank handle. Assemble the base plate by securing the remaining screws. Make sure that the holes of the mounting screw match the mounting holes of the new handle. Be sure to not over tighten the screw as this could cause the swivel or nylon roller to separate from the track.
