Heyer did an excellent job of contrasting Leonie's boyish manners with Avon's coolness and reserve. His calm demeanor is in stark contrast with her impulsive physical reactions and blood-lust. I also appreciated the way he was able to defeat the villain without intimidating the villain or chasing him. Instead, he employed insinuation.

Another thing I really liked about this book was the way Heyer subtlely pointed out the female limitations in their lives in this period. Leonie is not a fan of trading in her breeches and riding side-saddle to wear layers of skirts, petticoats, and dresses. She also isn't willing to ride on the side saddle and shoots enemies (despite it being a risky job). While Avon is somewhat irritated by her erratic ways at first but Avon soon realizes he loves her.

It was a bit challenging to keep track of the story at initially, since Heyer calls the Duke various names on the initial pages. But once you get it figured out, it becomes much easier to read. This book was fantastic and I would highly recommend it. You won't be let down whether you're a Georgette Heyer fan or you just like a good romance!

Avon's Relationship to Davenant

Avon is known for its beauty products, but it also offers a chance to earn and is a major advocate for women's financial independence. Avon has been around over 130 years, and has always stood up for change, optimism and, most importantly, for women.
