1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has made improvements to an already great pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They're lighter, feel more built, have more balanced sound profiles (though still bass-heavy), and come with an app that lets you do some audio customization. Their active noise cancellation works better than it did before, removing more ambient sound, and they have a longer continuous battery life than other models.

These headphones use Bluetooth 5.0, with support for SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. The latter can transfer high-resolution music, but you'll need to use compatible devices and streaming services. The WH-1000XM4s is also able to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and then automatically switch between them when needed. This feature can be enabled via the Sony Headphones Connect App and is very effective.

One of the major improvements over the XM3 is the sensitiveness of their touch panels. They respond faster to a tap on a panel, and this makes them easier to control during a phone call or to listen to music. Sony has added a feature to make voices sound clearer and more precise during calls. This is a noticeable and nice touch.

The WH-1000XM4s may not be perfect, but they're among the best wireless headphones we've ever tested. They are comfortable and well-made. They also have an energy-efficient battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can be used as a passive device by using an TRS cable. This is perfect for travel or preserving energy.

The WH-1000XM4s make a better choice than the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible, as well as an app companion to adjust the audio quality. The B&Ws are built better and can be paired with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD, and they have an AI-driven engine that attempts to up-scale compressed music to high-resolution. They can be worn with a sweater or coat because they function even when they are not on the head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not provide the best sound quality in this price range. The frequencies are fairly flat and lack details that headphones with higher prices might be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are boosted which is acceptable for most music genres but could be a problem for more delicate and complex genres. The bass is great, but lacks power.

One feature that's not present is the possibility of paused playback when you take the headset off. This is a standard feature in this price range and something Bose's competitors have offered for a long time. Another oversight was the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose provides preset EQ settings within the app however it would be nice to have manual control.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with support for multipoint and the more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust the volume and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s also come with four microphones built into the headset to hear your voice when you make calls. The headphones have good call quality, but they don't let you muffle the sound during playback as other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s came out in February 2022 added manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a welcome upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio company that makes high-performance headphones. They are renowned for their style and comfort, which let listeners know that they're listening to something special. They come with a high-performance USB DAC built in, making them suitable both for wireless and wired listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for 30 hours. We had more than 40 hours of playback time on average from a single charge. If you require a recharge, there's a light on the right ear cup that will change to red when the headphone needs to be charged.

For a pair of headphones for this price, they come with lots of features. They can connect to multiple devices simultaneously and offer automatic pairing. (You have to select the device you want to pair with by hand each time you listen.) They also have a built-in mic that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones also feature an easy-to-use interface that makes it easy to control your music and take calls.

For wireless headphones that are over-ear The Bathys perform very well in our tests of noise cancellation. They cut down the background sound by around 9 decibels in average. This isn't as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it's still pretty effective.

The Bathys headphones did well in our headphone tests. Their frequency response was largely similar to the headphone curve of SoundGuys with minor differences in the mids and bass. They have a bass-rich sound pattern that adds a lot of boom to mixes, however, they can make instruments and vocals such as cymbals sound veiled.

They also have excellent leakage resistance, so you can wear them in public without worrying about people hearing your music. Their mic is passable to record via Bluetooth with only a slight distortion between the mid-treble and treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new version of the company's top Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not an outstanding entry in this class. The latest pair improves on the previous model with more sleek design, better gesture controls and massive battery life.

The improvements are subtle, but can make for an over-ear set of headphones that feels like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s lie flat and do not fold however they come with a nice hardshell case that protects them on the go. The Momentum 4s are also compatible with all devices, just like other Bluetooth headphones of recent times, like the ones from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. This means they work with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, however they don't have the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked spatial audio) that you'll find on AirPods.

The biggest difference is the massive battery that can run for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation turned on. This is more than the majority of the competitors can provide and is enough for a long-distance trip without worrying about finding a power outlet to charge it.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating with a focus on their audio quality and ANC as two of their strengths. The only issue he has is they lack gravitas in mids and the treble. This means that orchestral pieces sound flat instead of grand. The Momentum 4s are comfortable and should not put too much pressure on your neck or ears. They can be fidgety if you wear them at home or during long listening sessions. They will move around on your head and make intense head movements. This can cause them suddenly wake up which can be distracting during music or calls. Fortunately, they shut down after 15 minutes of slumber by default and can be turned off manually off using the power button.
